Canada Trip /

I visited Vancouver, Kamloops, and Tofino for 2 weeks. I had been to Canada a couple of times before, but this was the first time visiting there after I began food styling.

In Canada, fruits and vegetables are mostly sold by the weight, and you pick what want. It was the same in the Netherlands where I grew up. Unfortunately, in most of places in Japan, fruits and vegetable are already packaged up in plastic containers or bags and you cannot make your own pick. It is really a shame because having to choose your own fruits and vegetables will make you touch, feel, and smell them, making  you learn more about what you eat.

And Quinoa was EVERYWHERE in restaurant menus & deli sections. Quinoa is getting popular in Tokyo too but it is so expensive!

A huge selection of beans, grains and seeds are also sold by weight. We do not have this in Japan either... We can only buy them in small packets and are relatively expensive. I wanted to buy them all and take them back to Japan!

It is also fun to see such a big variety of different cuts of beef and pork. We probably have a 1/3 of the variety in regular stores in Japan.... On the other hand,  thinly-sliced meats are probably not common. You probably have to cut it yourself or ask the butcher to cut it that way....

Aaaaaagh.... I wanted to LIVE inside this Italian grocery store... So many goodies! I had to get my "precious" salami with fennel seeds. It was all mine!

In Tofino, I got to go salmon fishing for the first time. It was the 4 of us & a fishing guide, and we caught 11 in total! 6 hours on the boat was long... I was quite close to getting sea-sick. at one point. They were all so much bigger than what we are used to in Japan. As soon as we got back to the dock, they cleaned all the fish right away. We are having them turn all the salmons into fillet, smoked salmon, candied, and canned. They will all be shipped to Tokyo in about 10weeks. I probably do not need to buy any salmon for more than a year!
The last picture was a black sea-bass. I did not know til that day that its spine and lower fin is super poisonous! And that the antidote for it is the liquid that comes out after you stab the sea-bass in the eye.... you are supposed to rub that liquid where you got stabbed.Leaning something new everyday.
After salmon fishing, I got to visit the famous fish tacos place. Everything was so fresh and tasty. I had to go back the next day once again.

On my last day in Canada, I assisted an ice-cream shoot by a food stylist/photographer, Tracey. Thanks for everything, Tracey!

Just a portion of props I bought in Canada.... I cannot wait to shoot with these new props!

That is it for my Canada report!
